To Be Seen

To Be Seen

I recently read (attempted to read) Jean-Paul Sartre’s seminal work Being and Nothingness – as one does.  I will not pretend I understood the thing fully, but it did leave me thinking about the discussions I have with my queer clients regarding their presentation and identity. Trans folk especially talk to me about the need to pass for safety reasons and because of this, their perception of passing is not necessarily based on their own understanding of femininity/masculinity and how it applies to them but aligned to societal norms.  Let us not even mention the challenges facing non-binary people!

Therapy Isn’t What You Think: Busting 7 Major Myths that Prevent Us Accessing Help

Life can get overwhelming and occasionally you may have thought: How do I get out of this? Or how can I feel better? You might have looked at some therapy options and then felt reluctant to talk to a stranger or uncomfortable about the whole process.

You are not alone. Therapy is often misunderstood, wrapped in myths that make it feel intimidating, indulgent, or just plain confusing. Let’s gently untangle a few of those.

1. Therapy is only for people with serious problems.

Therapy isn’t a last resort — it’s a space to think, feel, and grow. People come to

The Dartmouth Scar Experiment: When Perception Shapes Reality

The Dartmouth Scar Experiment: When Perception Shapes Reality

Occasionally, I tell my clients about the famous 1980 experiment by  Robert Kleck and Angelo Strenta, two psychologists  at Dartmouth College who conducted a most interesting study on how intensely our self-perception can distort social reality. They got some people together (no bias in the demographic of the subjects) and told them they would receive a realistic facial scar using clever makeup. After seeing the “scar” in a mirror, they were prepped to go forth into the world and interact as they normally would. But, as in those days you could do this sort of thing, there was a twist,

Guarding the Rainbow: Why Pride Marches Must Vet Their Sponsors

Every Pride march is important for so many reasons, especially as a living, breathing, organic proof of hard-won victories for the community. I do understand however that to make it all possible there are significant financial burdens - permits, security, staging, accessibility services, marketing, and more. It’s tempting and sometimes essential to cooperate with the corporate world. However, therein lies the danger because by accepting funding without careful scrutiny, the whole thing can jeopardize Pride’s core mission: elevating queer voices, celebrating diversity, and confronting injustice.

There are plenty of cases in the past where Pride corporate supporters were

The UK's Decline in LGBTQIA+ Friendliness: What Happened?

Once a beacon of LGBTQIA+ rights in Europe, the UK has now fallen to 22nd place in the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Index. This marks its lowest ranking ever, a stark contrast to its top position a decade ago. So, what led to this decline?

The recent Supreme Court decision defining women by biological sex has had a significant impact. This ruling resulted in the removal of all legal gender recognition points from the UK's score, as transgender individuals are no longer fully recognized as their affirmed gender in all legal contexts.

Beyond the court ruling, several other issues have contributed to

“I have no idea what fatherhood is – because I don’t know what dads actually do..."

“I have no idea what fatherhood is – because I don’t know what dads actually do..."

I have recently come across this article in the Telegraph – “I have no idea what fatherhood is – because I don’t know what dads actually do. If having a present father is so crucial to raising well-rounded children, why is there so little stigma when they abandon their family?”  written by Suzanne Moore. In this, among other predictable things, she explores the role of fathers in modern society, questioning their significance and societal expectations.

Maybe not surprising because of the author’s own experiences and bias, this text misses the point because it does two things – firstly it assumes that

Orphan Crushing Machine

In the age of viral news and feel-good stories, it's not uncommon to come across tales of individual heroism or charitable acts that aim to solve immediate problems. Yet, these stories often gloss over the larger, systemic issues at play. Crucially however, this concept can be applied

The Mental Health Benefits of Playing Computer Games

In recent years, computer games have become a popular pastime for people of all ages. While they are often associated with entertainment, they also offer a range of benefits for mental health. Anyone who knows me is aware that I am passionate about the ways in which pop culture such as comics, and gaming, can help with mental health challenges. We do need to acknowledge that excessive gaming does have negative outcomes. We also need to validate the fact that gaming culture can have connotations of bullying and misogyny, although one might argue not any higher than other walks of

Can You Be an LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Counsellor Without a Commitment to Social Justice?

In the realm of LGBTQIA+ affirmative counselling, and one of Pink Therapy's core requirements, commitment to social justice is often seen as a cornerstone of effective practice. But can a counsellor truly be affirming without this commitment?

LGBTQIA+ affirmative counselling is a therapeutic approach that validates and supports the identities and experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals. It aims to create a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their identities, relationships, and challenges without fear of discrimination or bias.  Social justice in counselling involves recognizing and challenging systemic inequalities that impact marginalized communities. For LGBTQIA+ clients, this means addressing issues like

Theory of Mind and Why Does It Matter...

Theory of Mind (ToM) is a fascinating psychological concept that refers to our ability to understand and interpret the thoughts, beliefs, and emotions of others. This cognitive skill is crucial for navigating social interactions and forming meaningful relationships.  At its core, Theory of Mind allows us to infer what others are thinking or feeling, even when they do not express it directly. This includes understanding that others may have beliefs, desires, and intentions that differ from our own. For example, when a child learns that another person can hold a false belief, like thinking a cereal box contains cereal
